Clacton Signs .co.uk is a website dedicated to the history of one the longest serving Sign Making families in the UK, 'The Wood Family'. As a family, their Sign Making dates back to 1948. The Wood's are now in their fourth generation as Signmakers.

A brief history - It all started in 1948...

Billy Wood, a travelling showman and bare nuckle boxing champion just couldn't find anyone to signwrite the panels of his travelling boxing booth so in 1948 he took matters into his own hands and taught himself the art of traditional signwriting.

His skills were passed down to his son David Wood who then went on to master the art of signwriting and his passion took him all over the country using his talents for companies such as Walls Ice Cream & Esso. At that time there was very little competition around and David had about as much work as he could handle.

Susan Wood (David's Wife) then joined the business and 'David Wood Signmakers' steadily grew. As a result of their commitment to excellent customer service they soon became the areas leading signmaking company.

David Wood Signmakers was then joined by sons Leonardo Wood & Mark Wood and traded under the name 'David Wood & Sons Signmakers'

Several years later David's brother Jim Wood joined the family business and the company changed their name to Wood Signs Ltd.

A few years later David Wood & Jim Wood handed the business down to Leonardo & Mark and the company name was changed to Able Signs Ltd.

William Wood (David & Susan's youngest son) then became involved on the financial side of the business as the company Accountant.

In 2004 Mark left the business and in 2007 Leonardo re-branded the company as Signs Made Easy Ltd.

Leonardo's son Jordan Wood now works for the company part time after school and at weekends.

Over the years there have been many changes but one thing that still remains is the relentless commitment to excellent customer service, which has been instrumental in the survival of one of the longest reigns in signmaking history.
